A low-key coastal Mexican restaurant that has garnered a high profile has officially launched its first Garden State location. Mariscos El Submarino is now open in Downtown Jersey City.
Situated at 103 Christopher Columbus Drive, Mariscos El Submarino’s Jersey City outpost is their third location. The brand initially launched in 2020 in the Queens neighborhood of Jackson Heights before expanding to Greenpoint in Brooklyn last year.
The restaurant drew such high praise that even the New York Times was dragged out of Manhattan to review the eatery in 2021. Mariscos El Submarine, which translates to Submarine Seafood offers an authentic Mexican seafood experience with a casual ambience.
The restaurant was founded by Amy Hernandez and Alonso Guzman, who both hail from the coastal Mexican state of Sinaloa. Their Jersey City location features both table and bar seating, and their most popular menu items have made the trip across the Hudson River.

Mariscos El Submarine offers an oyster bar to start and is known for their aguachiles, which are shrimp marinated in a spicy citrus sauce in flavors like Rojo, Verde, and Mango Habanero. One of their house specials is a Ceviche El Submarino, which mixes fish, shrimp, and octopus marinated in a house special citrus sauce.
The restaurant serves seafood cocktails with homemade sauces, coastal Mexican tacos with proteins like Baja Fish, Baja Shrimp, and steak and shrimp, and a variety of other dishes.
Despite the casual digs, the restaurant sports a full liquor license. Libations like micheladas and margarita varieties, including hibiscus and passion fruit, are on the menu, as is a selection of Mexican beers.
Mariscos El Submarine is now open on Columbus Drive daily from noon until 10 p.m. The restaurant, which has further expansion plans for two storefronts in the Brooklyn neighborhoods of Clinton Hill and Park Slope, can be followed on Instagram at the handle @mariscoselsubmarino.
